♪ the president is calling on a florida minister to listen to those better angels and call off a quran burning on saturday. local religious groups speaking out. we'll hear from one that says this could be an opportunity for all americans. i'm terry mcsweeney. the story's on the way. >> in that exclusive interview on "good morning america," president obama admits his voters focus on the economy his party to lose big. >> some of the clouds hanging over the bay. not talking many drizzle, if any at all. cooler weather this morning but a warming trend this afternoon and through the weekend. >> and a totally different picture for the commute as well this morning. much quieter. no hot spots. in fact, a minor delay at the bay bridge toll plaza right now.

>> 6 a.m. this thursday morning. thank you for waking up early and joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> i'm kristen sze. let's begin with new comments from president obama about a florida minister planning to engage in a quran burning protest to mark the september 11th terrorist attacks. in an exclusive 101 interview with "good morning america," a growing number of critics asking for the pastor to reconsider. >> i hope he listens to those better angels and understands that this is a destructive act that he's engaging in. >> republican sarah palin joined conservative, democrats religious leaders and military officials in urging jones to cancel the burning of the muslim holy book. terry mcsweeney joins us now with the bay area's reaction. >> local religious leaders are calling on the reverend jones to not desecrate the holy book of islam while some local muslims are feeling like they're caught in the crossfire of this

controversy. local faith groups got together in palo alto to call for peace and tolerance. one says she wished the world ignored jones and his congregation of just a few dozen. faith leaders are looking at this as an opportunity. >> i wish it hadn't happened. because it has, we reaffirm who we are. >> it brought back the topic of islamic-phobia and that has muslims feeling nervous. the reverend jones says besides death threats and pressure to call off the book burning he's also gotten a lot of encouragement. >> 6:02. five people recovering from minor injuries after the brakes on a dump truck apparently failed just before it plowed into 13 other vehicles in oakland. the driver told investigators he couldn't stop the truck while

exiting from eastbound interstate 580 on the grand avenue off-ramp at mcarthur boulevard. the truck first crushed a honda and shoved it into other vehicles yesterday afternoon. the driver expressed regret after what happened. >> and hope i can get ahold of people who got hurt. at least say i can say sorry, something, anything. i didn't do it on purpose, you know. but that ruined their day big-time you know. >> i think that everybody is really lucky. i think we're fortunate there was nobody in the backseat of the honda or in some of the other vehicles. i think we were very lucky. >> the truck driver didn't want to give his last name. he's been on the job for ten years. authorities are looking at his driving record but say it's unlikely that any criminal charges will be filed. >> 6:03. the state's highest court is refusing to order the attorney general to defend proposition 8, the state's ban on same sex marriage.

backing of the measure had hoped to force the state officials to defend the law during appeals since they may not have the legal standing to do so themselves. currently the case is waiting to be heard by the 9th circuit court of appeals. >> a critical hurdle cleared despite major opposition. yesterday the metropolitan transportation commission voted to allocate $20 million to build the controversial connector. the tram would replace the buses that currently link the airport to the bart station. state and federal agencies are expected to approve the additional $500 million needed to build the corrector. they say it's overpriced and pointless. supporters say it will provide a better ride to thousands of airport trafficers. >> 75 silicon valley ceo's have stepped up to the plate and signed a letter urging major league baseball to let the athletics move to san jose. the mercury news reports the

letter claims a ballpark in downtown san jose will attract more corporate sponsors than other bay area locations. the a's face a hurdle because the giants still own the territorial rights to santa clara county. the lineup of heavy hitters included the ceo's of cisco systems, yahoo and e-bay. >> some of that baseball footage there. ask mike feel like baseball weather or football weather? >> definitely felt like football weather there yesterday. no game at home today so no baseball forecast. we'll talk about what's going to happen now and through the afternoon hours. if you're stepping out, you may notice it is cooler this morning in most neighborhoods like los gatos at 49. mid to upper 40s in novato napa and santa rosa. low to mid-50s san francisco, menlo park for most of the bay. upper 50s around oakland and san jose. compared to 24 hours ago 2 degrees cooler in livermore and otherwise, 3 san francisco and fremont. 6 mountain view.

north bay, 13 novato. 11 santa rosa 9 degrees cooler in napa. you'll be doing it again tomorrow. as far as today, mostly cloudy this morning. have flight arrival delays into sfo because of the clouds of that been increasing all morning. temperatures still in the 40s in the north bay, 50s for the rest of us. notice the sunshine by noon. the relaxes winds. it will be warmer and feel warmer with mid to upper 50s half moon bay, san francisco. upper 60s inland valleys. bit time 4:00 rolls around partly cloudy with low to mid-70s inland valleys with mid to upper 60s around the bay and 57 half moon bay. accu-weather seven-day forecast, our biggest jump in temperatures tomorrow, about 4 to 8 degrees warmer. a couple more degrees warmer over the weekend where temperatures hover near low 60s along the coast. >> seems like we settled into our commute this week. much easier this morning. traffic flowing well. really no accidents or hot spots

welcome back. breaking news out of boston. "the boston globe" is reporting that patriot's quarterback bay area native and high school graduate tom brady was involved in a car accident. the paper says brady's car collided with a van. the associated president is reporting based on an official with the team saying brady was not injured. we were told the passenger in the van was unconscious when taken from the scene to the hospital. the accident comes as the patriots prepare for its season opener this weekend against the cincinnati bengals. >> president obama is conceding if the midterm election is a referendum on the economy democrats will not do well. however, the president is also offering new criticism of his

opponents saying he has not seen a single new idea out of the republicans to jump start the economy. president obama says he believes democrats will maintain control of both congressional houses if people take a look at what democrats stand for and what republicans stand for. you can see much more of george stephanopoulos's exclusive interview with the president coming up right here on abc 7 "good morning america" at 7 a.m. >> the legality of state worker furloughs is in hand with california's supreme court. during oral arguments yesterday labor groups argued the governor's order violates a collective bargaining agreement with state employees guarantees 40-hour work weeks. workers must take three unpaid days off a month amounting to a 14% pay cut but an attorney for the state claims the governor has authority to take emergency action during a fiscal crisis and cutting workers' pay is a lot better than just laying them off. the court has 90 days to issue a

ruling. meantime the furloughs will continue. >> governor schwarzenegger leaves on a six-day trade mission to china. yesterday he stopped by marvel technology in santa clara. executives from the semiconductor company are among the many who will travel with the governor. they say california has increased its exports by $25 billion since 2003 but more needs to be done. >> we must keep pushing forward. we never should just sit back and enjoy and rest on our laurels. no always keep pushing because there's much more out there, many more markets and many more opportunities that we can seize. >> during the trip the governor will make a pitch for the bay area to host the world expo in 2020. that event was formerly known as the world' fair and currently underway in shanghai. it takes place every five years. >> still going on. host the world expo. let's take a look what the weather holds for us. hoping for a warm-up. >> yeah. record cold high temperatures

yesterday. we had a little drizzle measurable in some spots. from there the only place we can go is up. an unusually sharp front that moved through thanks to our friends up north. it is getting colder every day up there and eventually more of those systems are going to come our way to transition into fall. look at the thick cloud deck this morning. but unlike yesterday morning, if there's any drizzle it's mainly in the santa cruz mountains and mount hamilton. we'll talk temperatures. still mid to upper 40s santa rosa napa not far behind. 50 san rafael. 49 in los gatos. low 50s redwood city and the rest of us pretty much mid to upper 50s. monterey bay and inland low to mid-50s. salinas a little warmer 57. a cool mass to a slightly warmer one and that will happen with breezes relaxing as i high pressure moves in. brighter but cooler than

average. partly cloudy, cool but dry tonight and warmer tomorrow. we make our biggest jump tomorrow and kind of hold steady through the weekend where the weather will be more or less uneventful and more comfortable. there's the cold front. it pushed all the way south of us during the overnight hours while you're sleeping. we're in the cooler air mass but notice here we are in the back half of it. once that starts to move out, this area of high pressure will move in and bring us the warmer weather starting tomorrow. today a partly cloudy sky in the south bay with low to mid-70s. how about 71 cupertino. slightly cooler on the peninsula, mid to upper 60s in most neighborhoods. menlo park could crack 70. along the coast some sunshine today with temperatures upper 50s. sunset at 60. on the other side downtown south san francisco in the mid-60s with sausalito. upper 60s in san rafael. your beaches will see sunshine with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s. about 10 to 15 degrees warmer.

when it comes to veterans, no one fights harder than jerry mcnerney. when some vets were forced to travel hours for care mcnerney fought for a new v.a. medical facility, and won. mcnerney took on washington gridlock, to improve care for vets with traumatic brain injuries. his plan became law. that's why vfw state commander dave norris endorsed mcnerney. i'm jerry mcnerney, and i'm honored to approve this message. thanks, dad.

>> terry, thanks. police are investigating overnight homicide in east oakland where the victim was killed with his own gun. it happened after 10:00 last night when a group of men were eating at a taco truck parked at a lot near 44th avenue and international boulevard. police say another group of men drove up. there was some kind of dispute. one of the men who had been eating took out his gun and fired it. there was a scuffle. somebody grabbed the gun from him and shot him dead. both groups then fled the scene. arson investigators have been called to the scene of an early morning fire at an apartment complex at 60th street and m.l.k. in oakland. the fire which started just before 3 a.m. was knocked down quickly. the witnesses reported hearing an explosion then seeing huge flames. officials say the fire is extremely suspicious because the same apartment burned yesterday afternoon. nobody was injured in either fire but seven people have been displaced. >> this morning a vallejo man at the center of an east bay murder mystery is free on bail. a judge reduced bail for

72-year-old charles rittenhouse from $2 million to $25,000 yesterday. police arrested him last week after the bodies of his wife and another woman were found at his home; however, prosecutors have only charged rittenhouse with possession of explosives and chemicals also found in the house. investigators say they're still trying to determine his involvement, if any, in the deaths of the two women. police believe the two women along with the man and a fourth woman were killed in a murder spree committed by 38-year-old valdemoro. he was shot and killed by the highway patrol after a high-speed chase. the search for a possible fifth victim has turned up nothing so far at a pittsburg landfill. police expect to continue that search for a 7th day this morning. family and friends of a murder victim pleaded with shoppers at san mateo's hillsdale mall to help them find the man's killer. you may remember community activist david lewis of east palo alto was shot to death june

8th at the mall. lewis' family shared leaflets with people in the mall hoping they might remember something about the tragic night three months ago. a $50,000 reward is offered in the case but police need witnesses to come forward. >> not trying to blame continuethe police but we don't know. we're investigating. they're investigating. we have to put it in their hands. >> we have a whole police department that wants to help, find progress and bring this individual to justice for david. >> if you know anything about lewis's murder san mateo police urge you to call them immediately. >> this morning a suspect under arrest and police looking for a second suspect in connection with a pot-growing operation discovered in the east bay hills. police seized 2,000 mature marijuana plants at the regional wilderness park in san ramon yesterday. the marijuana was grown in a remote area. officers spotted a second suspect near the scene but he got away before officers could catch up with him. >> if you get a job with the city of mountain view in the

future you're going to have to get fingerprint. the city council required that for all new hires to be sure they're not leaving off criminal history. the rule exempts elected city council members. some argued they too should be fingerprinted but lost out. some cities already fingerprint new workers. >> health officials have lifted a health advisory at the redwood shores lagoon. people were being told to stay away from the water after 50000 gallons of raw sewage spilled into the lagoon two weeks ago. the problems were then compounded when a small plane crashed into the lagoon last week spilling fuel into the water. that accident killed three people. the san mateo county environmental health department now says the water is safe. the lagoon is once again open to swimmers and boaters. >> the only gun shop in san francisco has the go-ahead to reopen. they shut down its retail operation when its owner decided to start a wholesale gun

let's break down this thursday, mostly cloudy at 8:00. still upper 40s in the north bay valleys with 50 degree temperatures for the rest of us. increase in the sunshine by lunch and temperatures hitting the low to mid-60s around the bay with mid to upper 60s the south bay and north bay valleys but still about the mid to upper 50s along the coast into san francisco. by 4:00 we start to see tape erring of the breezes away from the ocean and temperatures hitting the low to mid-70s in the south bay east bay valleys and the north bay with mid to upper 60s in most other neighborhoods and about 57 degrees in half moon bay. let's take a look at that warming trend. it starts mainly tomorrow because we'll see our biggest jump about 4 to 8 degrees from the coast through our inland neighborhoods and throughout the weekend and into early next week. a pretty quiet pattern with morning clouds afternoon sunshine, mid-70s at the bay and mid-80s inland. frances talks about the bay bridge with details. >> that accident being cleared off to treasure island, looks like the backup has now grown.

house sits on to expand its busiest fire station. the city council moved to seize the property after the owner rejected a $975,000 offer. a family of 15 has rented the home for the last ten years even though the city will compensate them to relocate, the family says it has no idea where they'll go. san mateo says the 40-year-old fire station will be torn down and rebuilt. >> colorado for people are missing from the area where a wildfire is burning near boulder and the blaze is only 10% contained. it destroyed 135 homes so far making it the most destructive fire in state history. it forced the evacuation of some 3500 residents. fire conditions could get worse today with winds expected to pick up and humidity expected to fall. there have been no injuries reported so far and the cause of that fire is still unknown. >> we had the winds yesterday but certainly we also had the humidity. >> yeah, absolutely.
